Its title, "Family record. Before the war and since the war," sets a before-and-after contrast around emancipation. The Krebs Lithographing Company of Cincinnati printed this chromolithograph around 1880, and W. H. Cowell designed it for Black families. Like other printed family registers of the period, it left space to record births, marriages and deaths by hand. For many formerly enslaved people, such a record was a way to reclaim names and kinship that slavery had made hard to document. The subject headings, which cite slavery in the United States from 1800 to 1860, place it within that effort.
