Steel engravings of this kind were produced by W. Wellstood from drawings by A.C. Warren, and this view of Cincinnati appeared in the second volume of *Picturesque America*, the illustrated survey of American scenery and towns that William Cullen Bryant edited for D. Appleton & Company. By the early 1870s Cincinnati, on the Ohio River, was among the largest river ports and manufacturing centers in the country, and the publication's engravings were meant to show such places to readers across the nation. The record's details are old and not fully verified, but the print reflects the mid-century habit of presenting American cities as both working places and scenic subjects.
