A log hut, a washtub, a bed, and a cat make up the plain household scene in this woodcut from McGuffey's Eclectic Primer, printed in Cincinnati in 1849. The primer was part of a series compiled by William Holmes McGuffey, an Ohio educator, and issued by the Cincinnati firm of Truman & Smith. Cincinnati was a busy printing and publishing center on the Ohio River at the time, and McGuffey's readers went on to shape reading instruction in American schools for generations. Simple pictures like this one were meant to help young children connect printed words with everyday objects they already knew.
