This woodcut page from *McGuffey's Eclectic Primer*, printed in Cincinnati in 1849, pairs the letters A through M with small pictured illustrations, a common method for teaching children to read by linking each letter to a familiar object. William Holmes McGuffey's readers, first issued in the 1830s, became some of the most widely used schoolbooks in the United States, and Cincinnati, a major printing center on the Ohio River, was where many of them were produced. Pages like this one show how early schoolbooks combined simple engraved images with basic literacy instruction for young learners.
