Riding a scenic railway, an early roller coaster, sets this August 1908 scene apart from the street-corner portraits of young newsboys in the same album. The National Child Labor Committee caption card calls it a newsboys' picnic, but its wording is cut off after that word, so the full context is uncertain. Lewis Hine, who worked for the committee documenting child labor across the country, is credited based on the print's provenance. The outing offers a glimpse of leisure that contrasts with the daily work of selling papers that fills Hine's street trades series.
