Few railroad crossings in Kentucky look as dramatic as the span shown here, where the Cincinnati Southern Railway crosses the Kentucky River from a viewpoint at the mouth of the Dix River. The line was built to carry traffic from Cincinnati south toward Chattanooga, and its high iron bridge was a major engineering project of the later 1870s, stretching far above the gorge. The photograph is credited to James Mullen of Lexington and dated around 1877, though that date comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. Views like this show how the railroad reshaped the rugged river country of central Kentucky.
