Few railroad crossings in the country sit as high above their water as the Kentucky River High Bridge, which carried the Cincinnati Southern Railroad across a deep gorge in central Kentucky. Built in the 1870s as part of the line linking Cincinnati to the South, the bridge was a major engineering feat of its day, and its towering iron trestle became a landmark for travelers and a subject for photographers. This c1902 print, one of many views of the structure registered for copyright in the early 1900s, shows how the bridge's length and height dwarfed the river and the surrounding hills.
