Few city views from the 1860s stretch as far as this one, a panoramic albumen print nearly eight feet long that takes in Cincinnati, Covington and Newport in a single sweep. The three towns face one another across the Ohio River, and the waterfront and the barges along it show how central river traffic was to their economy. The picture was entered for copyright in July 1866, the year after the Civil War ended, when Cincinnati ranked among the largest manufacturing and shipping centers in the Midwest. Its length lets viewers trace the riverbank block by block, which makes it useful for anyone studying the period's urban growth.
