The Island Queen was a side-wheel steamboat that carried passengers on the Ohio River at Cincinnati, a type of vessel whose paddle wheels on either side made it a familiar sight on the river's busy waterfront. Boats like this one ran summer excursions and short trips out to riverside resorts, offering city residents a cool escape in an era before widespread car travel. This print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American towns, rivers and landmarks for tourism and promotion around 1900 to 1910. Its record gives little beyond the title, date and copyright number, so the boat's appearance and setting are the best guides to its everyday role on the river.
