Coney Island here is not the New York beachfront most people picture, but the amusement park on the Ohio River at Cincinnati, which drew crowds with its lake, rowboats and piers. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, resorts and scenery between about 1900 and 1915, when railroads and promoters were eager to sell travel. The lake and boats show how such parks offered cheap summer recreation to city families, many of whom reached them by streetcar. The scene captures a moment when leisure on the water was a central attraction.
