Chester Park's lake and clubhouse, shown here, was the centerpiece of one of Cincinnati's best-known turn-of-the-century amusement parks, a place where families came to rent rowboats and spend warm afternoons on the water. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of views of American resorts and cities in the early 1900s, made this glass-plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1915, when such parks drew large crowds by streetcar. Trolley lines carried city residents out to places like Chester Park for dances, picnics and boating, and the photograph captures the leisure culture that grew up around them.
