Eden Park's water tower anchors this view, a stone landmark from the 1890s tied to Cincinnati's waterworks on the hill above the Ohio River. The park, laid out on the high ground east of downtown, was one of several green spaces the city developed in the late 19th century to give residents room to walk and picnic away from crowded streets. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely between about 1900 and 1910 documenting towns, parks and scenery across the country, made this glass negative. Its views are valued today as a record of how American cities looked at the turn of the century.
