Chester Park, an amusement park in Cincinnati, is the setting here, and the windmill in the subject list gives the scene an unusual touch of rural whimsy amid the park's attractions. Turn-of-the-century amusement parks like this one drew city residents by streetcar for picnics, dancing, boating and rides, and they were a common subject for commercial photographers of the period. The Detroit Publishing Company made many such views of American cities and landmarks, and this glass negative is dated to about 1906 based on the company's catalog. Its survival as a dry plate negative makes it a useful record of how the park looked in the early twentieth century.
