The steamboat *Cincinnati*, a side-wheel vessel, is the focus here, pictured on the Ohio River at the city that shares its name. Side-wheelers like it were a familiar sight on western rivers well into the early twentieth century, carrying freight and passengers between river towns. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American places and transportation in large numbers. Its date of about 1906 is estimated from the company's own catalog, so it offers a useful snapshot of river travel at that time.
