Elm Street in Cincinnati, Ohio, appears here as a busy commercial thoroughfare, captured on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many street views like this one between about 1900 and 1910, documenting cities across the country. Cincinnati was then a major Midwestern trading and manufacturing center, so the scene offers a useful look at urban business life before the automobile reshaped downtown streets. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
