Fifth Street running north from Race Street in downtown Cincinnati is the subject here, a stretch of the city's commercial core captured on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced and marketed large numbers of American views in the early twentieth century, made this image sometime between 1900 and 1910, when Cincinnati was a major river port and manufacturing center with dense blocks of shops, offices and warehouses. Its survival as a glass plate, later donated to the Library of Congress through the State Historical Society of Colorado, makes it a useful record of the street's storefronts and traffic at the time.
