Clifton Avenue runs through one of Cincinnati's older residential neighborhoods, where wealthy families built substantial houses in the decades around 1900, when streetcar lines made the hilltop district a desirable place to live away from the downtown core. This view comes from an 8 x 10 inch glass dry-plate negative, a format common to the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American towns, streets and architecture in the early 1900s. The company's large-format plates offer a sharp record of how such homes were set on their lots, with their porches, landscaping and street frontage intact. The negative's catalog notes show it later entered the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
