A clubhouse on the grounds of a Cincinnati country club is the subject of this glass dry plate negative, made around 1907. Country clubs were becoming popular gathering spots for well-to-do families in American cities, offering golf, tennis, dining and dances away from downtown crowds. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that traveled widely to document towns, resorts and landscapes across the country in the early twentieth century. The 8 by 10 inch plate was later given to the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, which helps explain how a Cincinnati view ended up in a Colorado collection.
