Cincinnati's Mt. Adams incline carried passengers up a steep bluff above the city, linking the downtown streets below with the hilltop neighborhood of Mount Adams. The city's sharp hills made inclined railways a practical necessity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when ordinary streetcars could not manage grades this steep. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many views of American cities around 1906, recorded the scene on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, preserving how the incline looked at the time.
