The entrance gate to Coney Island, the amusement park on the Ohio River east of Cincinnati, is the focus of this view, which shows the park's front door as visitors would have approached it. Streetcar lines brought crowds to the park's rides, bathing beach, and dance pavilions, and its gates marked the point where a day trip became an outing. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1915, photographed American cities, resorts, and landmarks for travel promotion. Its archive preserves a clear record of how such entrances were built to draw visitors in.
