Coney Island in Cincinnati was not the New York beach resort of the same name but a riverside amusement park on the Ohio shore, reached by steamboat and streetcar from the city's east side. Its roller coaster was one of the park's main draws, part of a wave of early twentieth-century parks built to give working families cheap summer outings. This color halftone was produced by a photomechanical process that let printers reproduce photographs in ink on the page, so the card carries no date, but its method points to the period when such postcards and souvenir views circulated widely. Look for the steel framework and the crowd below, which show how central thrill rides were to urban leisure.
