A quick step printed under the name of the Cincinnati Rover Guards, a volunteer military company, shows how local militia pride reached the parlor piano. This color lithograph cover, dated about 1853, was produced by Klauprech & Menzel, a firm working in a city with a large German-American population and an active printing trade. Quick steps were brisk marches meant for dancing and home performance, so publishers often paired a military subject with a decorative design to attract buyers. The cover advertised both the music and the unit it honored.
