Cincinnati's pork trade earned it the nickname "Porkopolis," and this chromolithograph shows the industry as its packers chose to present it: a colorful cartoon of the kind the city's pork packers' association sent to the International Exposition at Vienna in 1873. Drawn by H. F. Farny and published by the Cincinnati firm Ehrgott & Krebs, the print turns a meatpacking operation into a bright, almost festive scene meant to advertise the city's output to the world. Its wide circulation and the library's record of two impressions, one in color and one in black and white, show how seriously the trade used such images to promote its name abroad.
