The poster announces the Eleventh Cincinnati Industrial Exposition in 1883, a trade fair that showed off the machinery, manufactured goods, and inventions of a city then growing rapidly as an industrial center on the Ohio River. Its color lithography was produced by the Krebs Lithographing Company of Cincinnati, a local firm that made many of the bright, large-format posters used to advertise fairs, theater productions, and commercial products in the late nineteenth century. Such posters were meant to be read from a distance on streets and in shop windows, so their bold layout and vivid color were central to their purpose.
