Mordecai "Three Fingers" Brown, the Cincinnati pitcher whose nickname came from a farm accident that mangled his right hand, stands on the field in June 1913 with teammates Harry McIntire, Dahlgren, and Joe McManus. Brown was one of the most successful pitchers of the dead-ball era. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the files of a news photo service that supplied pictures to newspapers across the country, so it was likely made to be published quickly with a caption rather than as a formal portrait.
