The name on the caption card is spelled "Hoblitsel," the period spelling that Bain News Service used for Dick Hoblitzell, a first baseman who came up through the Cincinnati club in the National League. The 1911 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee, so it reflects an informed estimate rather than a date written on the negative. Bain's staff made portraits like this one for newspapers and magazines that ran player pictures, so the glass plate preserves a working image of a ballplayer as the press saw him in the early 1910s.
