Bob Bescher, the Cincinnati Reds outfielder, is shown here in a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early 1900s. Bescher was one of the fastest base runners of his day and led the National League in stolen bases in 1911. The 1913 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research rather than from the negative itself, so it is best read as an estimate. Bain's glass negatives capture the look of ballplayers in the years before radio and television made players familiar to fans.
