Earl Blackburn was a pitcher whose brief major league stint came with the Cincinnati club of the National League, and this glass negative captures him in the team's colors during the 1913 season. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work assembled by the Bain News Service, a New York wire photo agency that supplied newspapers with sports and news images in the early twentieth century. Its date and identification were later confirmed by baseball researchers at the Society for American Baseball Research, so the caption reflects careful checking rather than the agency's original note alone. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of press photography before film became common, and they reward close looking at uniforms, equipment and the posed stance of players of the period.
