Aboard the cruiser U.S.S. Cincinnati, the executive officer, Kelley, is pictured in his own quarters, a rare view of an officer's living space from the 1890s. The ship was a protected cruiser commissioned in 1894, part of the Navy's move toward modern steel warships after decades of wooden fleets. The record attributes the photograph to a photographer named Hart and lists it in a Detroit Publishing Company catalog, a firm later known for its color photochrom prints of American scenery. The large 14 by 11 inch glass negative captures the room's furnishings in considerable detail.
