Few places in Yellowstone look as sculpted as the Central Basins at Mammoth Hot Springs, where mineral-rich water has built up stepped terraces of travertine over thousands of years. This stereograph, number 93 in a series of 122 views of the park, was published around 1876 by W.I. Marshall of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Yellowstone had been set aside as the first national park only a few years earlier, in 1872, and views like this one helped introduce its hot springs and geysers to audiences in the East. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical images would have given the terraces a convincing sense of depth.
