Mammoth Hot Springs, in the northwest corner of what is now Yellowstone National Park, is where hot water builds a landscape instead of only steaming in place. Its stepped travertine terraces form as mineral-rich water cools and leaves calcium carbonate behind. This card, number 94 in a series of 122 Yellowstone views, looks across the upper basins to show how those formations climb the slope. Published in 1876, four years after Congress created the park in 1872, it was designed to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the terraces a sense of depth.
