The "Upper Basins" view shows the terraced travertine formations at Mammoth Hot Springs in what is now Wyoming, where mineral-rich water builds up stone steps and pools over time. Issued in 1876 as number 103 in a series of 122 Yellowstone views, the card was made for the stereoscope, a parlor viewer that fused two side-by-side images into a single three-dimensional scene. Only a few years after Congress set aside Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872, such cards helped distant readers picture a landscape few had seen in person.
