Number 95 in a series of 122 Yellowstone views, this stereograph shows the upper basins of Mammoth Hot Springs, where mineral-rich water spills over stepped pools and leaves behind pale travertine. The photograph dates to 1876, just four years after Congress set Yellowstone aside as the first national park, when few Americans had seen its wonders firsthand. Cards like this one were read through a handheld viewer, letting viewers at home feel they stood among the terraces. The publisher's name, William Isaac Marshall, marks it as part of his commercial series of Yellowstone views.
