The upper basins at Mammoth Hot Springs, where white travertine terraces climb in tiers above the active pools, are the subject of this stereograph, No. 96 in a series of 122 Yellowstone views. Published in 1876, four years after Congress created Yellowstone as the first national park, it shows how quickly photographers were working to make the remote region known to the public. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images gave the terraces a depth and scale that a flat print could not, offering a useful record of how the formations looked in the 1870s.
