The card's title points to the Lone Tree Basin at Mammoth Hot Springs, where mineral-rich water has built up terraces of travertine over thousands of years. Published in 1876 by William I. Marshall as number 99 in a series of 122 Yellowstone views, it dates from just a few years after Congress set the area aside as the first national park in 1872. Stereograph cards like this were viewed through a lens, which gave the stone steps and pools a depth that a flat print could not.
