Lone Tree Basins is one of the Mammoth Hot Springs views in a set of 122 Yellowstone scenes that William I. Marshall issued as stereograph cards, and this example is numbered 98 in that series. The Mammoth Hot Springs terraces form as mineral-rich water cools and leaves calcium carbonate behind, building up the pools and ledges visible here. Made in 1876, just four years after Congress set aside Yellowstone as the first national park, the card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which merged two slightly different photographs into one three-dimensional scene for parlor audiences far from the territory.
