Numbered 92 in its series, this stereograph shows the Central Basins at Mammoth Hot Springs, where mineral deposits have built stepped terraces down the hillside in Yellowstone. Publisher William I. Marshall issued it as part of *Yellowstone National Park Illustrated by 122 Views*, a set that appeared in the years after Congress made the area the first national park in 1872. Viewed through a stereoscope, cards like this gave parlor audiences a three-dimensional look at landscapes most of them would never visit. The 1876 date places it among the early commercial photographs of the park's springs.
