Labeled "Basket Basins" in the Mammoth Hot Springs series, this stereograph shows one of the mineral-rimmed pools that make Yellowstone's travertine terraces so distinctive. It is number 100 in a set of 122 park views published in 1876, four years after Congress set Yellowstone aside as the first national park. William I. Marshall issued the card, and its paired images were meant for a stereoscope, giving parlor viewers a sense of depth in a landscape most would never see in person. The catalog subject headings point to Hot Springs, Arkansas instead, a mismatch worth keeping in mind when using the record.
