The glass negative titled *Doorman Willard*, dated around 1921, comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded city streets, buildings and working people in the early twentieth century. The title is taken from notes the company wrote on the negatives or their sleeves, so the sitter's identity and the exact setting have not been verified. Like many plates of its age, this one shows streaks and small blemishes caused by the natural deterioration of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging the image. The Library of Congress received the negative as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
