A traffic jam, dated November 11, 1921, is the subject of this glass negative, though the title comes from unverified notes left by the National Photo Company, so the exact street is not confirmed. The date falls on Armistice Day, and the burial of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery took place that same day, drawing large crowds to the capital. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., from the early 1900s into the 1930s, recording city life, and glass plates like this one hold fine detail. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947, and the coating may show streaks from natural deterioration.
