The title on this glass negative identifies Julius Daranyi as a traffic cop, dated June 8, 1924, a rare kind of street-level subject for the period. In the 1920s, growing automobile use pushed cities to find better ways to direct crowded intersections, and novelty officers often drew newspaper attention. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio whose pictures were given to the Library of Congress in 1947 by Herbert A. French. The title was taken from data written on the negative and has not been verified, and the glass shows streaks from deterioration in its original coating.
