Julius Rosenwald, the Chicago merchant who led Sears, Roebuck and Company, is the subject of this 1929 glass negative, made in the same period when he was best known for his philanthropy. Rosenwald helped fund thousands of schools, shops, and teacher housing for Black children across the rural South, and his giving shaped the Rosenwald Fund. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented public figures and government life, produced the negative, which was later donated to the Library of Congress. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, typical of deterioration in the original glass coatings.
