The title places this view at the golf course of the Chevy Chase Club, a private club in the Maryland suburbs just northwest of Washington, D.C., and names a Finlay, though the record does not say who he was. The club dates to the 1890s and became one of the region's best-known country clubs, which made it a natural subject for a studio that served Washington's professional and social circles. The National Photo Company worked in the capital in the early twentieth century and left behind a large body of such views. The faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
