The record names an Indian Republican club on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, photographed on March 10, 1925. The reservation is home to the Sicangu Lakota, and the club's existence reflects a moment of political change. The Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 had just made Native Americans citizens of the United States, opening the way for many to take part in elections and party politics. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio, made the negative, and its pictures often documented Native communities and public life for a wide audience. The glass shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when viewing it.
