Glen Echo, Maryland, a stretch of Potomac riverbank northwest of Washington, is the place this 1928 glass negative records, at a time when the park drew city residents for summer rides, dancing, and outings. The site began as a Chautauqua assembly in 1891 and grew into an amusement park reached by trolley. The National Photo Company, which photographed the capital region in these years, left a large body of such views of everyday leisure. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, and they are part of the negative's physical history.
