A portrait of a man identified only as Mr. Hesse, taken at a botanical garden, is the subject of this glass negative, though the title comes from studio notes that have not been independently verified. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio known for its pictures of city sights and visitors, is credited with the image, which is dated to about 1928 or 1929 based on neighboring negatives. The glass shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is part of what makes the plate worth examining closely. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
