Among the many portraits in this group of National Photo Company glass negatives, this one captures Julius Rosenwald, the president of Sears, Roebuck and Company of Chicago, who came to Washington in late 1919 as a member of the Second Industrial Conference. That gathering brought together business leaders, labor representatives and members of the public to discuss the postwar tensions between employers and workers in the year after the First World War ended. Rosenwald, who guided Sears through its growth into a national mail-order giant, was known as a philanthropist who later funded rural schools for Black children across the South. The glass negative shows the streaks and blemishes typical of early coatings that have deteriorated over time.
