A fire threatened the headquarters of the National Woman's Party in Washington, D.C., on January 7, 1920, and the caption reports that the party's workers quickly removed records and valuable papers before the flames could reach them. The timing gave the moment extra weight: the Nineteenth Amendment, which would guarantee women the vote, was not yet ratified, and the party's files documented years of campaigning. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm whose glass negatives record the city's events and everyday scenes in the 1910s and 1920s. The caption breaks off before describing the neighbor's part in the excitement, so that detail is not recorded.
