Photographed on his arrival in Washington, this glass negative records Admiral John Rushworth Jellicoe during a visit to the United States in January 1920. Jellicoe had commanded the British Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, the largest clash of battleships in the First World War, so his appearance drew considerable attention. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio, produced many press pictures of visiting officials and dignitaries. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the gradual deterioration of its original coatings.
