Massasoit, the Wampanoag sachem, is shown here on his way to meet the Pilgrims in 1621, the year the two peoples formed the alliance that held for more than half a century. The meeting took place near Plymouth, where the English had landed the previous winter and lost nearly half their company to sickness and hunger. Images like this one were often made long after the event, so they reflect the artist's idea of the scene more than its exact details. It is worth noticing how the picture frames the encounter as a formal diplomatic moment, a view shaped by later generations as much as by 1621 itself.
